Where Community Grows

Vision

Goals for the Project

  1. Secure the land for the orchard, prepare the infrastructure
for the Association and the plantings, and cultivate it as a
    community endeavor.
  2. Provide a focus for service toward the betterment of our neighborhood’s quality of life, while protecting our green space.
  3. Our children could join in multi-generational endeavors while they can be mentored in the ideals and practices of ‘grass-root’ responsibilities.
  4. Function as a model for sustainability through the tradition of growing and then sharing the food. The concept of from the tree to the table will be uniquely demonstrated by uniting the activity of growing the food locally and by collectively preparing and/or preserving the food as a neighborhood event.
  5. Extend outreach using our mobile kitchen facility that is adapted for open-air block events.
This ‘pop-up kitchen’ could be set up in street and parking lot situations close to areas where neighbors want to share their harvests. The cookers, tents, and tables would be a visually exciting arena for using the food raised in the same vicinity as it is prepared.
Sharing the food preparation with local chefs and master food preservers, the community would achieve (free from the costs of bricks-and-mortar or rent) a focus for gathering and sharing. Eventually our group could join with other interested neighborhoods in sharing the mobile kitchen concept and facility, and it could reach into under-served neighborhoods throughout the city.
